Why Race? Another Thought.

On the drive back down Boulder Canyon after the run Sunday it occurred to me I have another reason for running formal events: Preparation.

Getting conditioning, rest, nutrition, hydration, elimination patterns (ahem--more about that some time when I'm more comfortable with this format), emotions, motivation--getting these all in alignment, at the same time avoiding injury, isn't an easy or immediately intuitive matter for me.

Learning to focus on them and make conscious decisions has required me to become much more sensitive to my own habits and patterns. To coax them into synchrony so they are all at some semblance of readiness at one time is a real challenge.

For someone interested in the art and practice of self-discipline, there's a purity to it found in few other places in life.

I like it.
