Like a lot of people, I always figured one of the cool things about running is how little gear it takes to do it. I knew I'd need better shoes than the ones I mow the lawn in, but figured that would be the end of it.
My first blisters and runner's toe disabused me of that notion. Good socks really help.
My running coach pointed out how wet my cotton t-shirts were getting after even a mile on the trail. "Well, I sweat when I run," I said, pointing out the obvious.
"That's why you need to wear something better than cotton to run in," he said in cool reply.
About that time Mary Huron Hunter (thanks, Mary) gave me my first running shirt, as a token of thanks for a portrait I had done for her.
"Wow!"
I could hardly believe how much cooler I was when I ran. The thing actually worked the way it was designed to work. And with my torso so much cooler, my breathing was easier, my running smoothed out, my fatigue lessened. All from a wisp of white fabric replacing my sturdy, reliable cotton. (Well, it could also be that my conditioning was improving, but I know it was more fun to run without dripping all over and carrying an extra five pounds on my back.)
So I've come to know Road Runner Sports, taken advantage of the expertise and the discount we get at Boulder Running Company, and watched for sales. Speaking of which, here's a good one.
Fleet Feet Sports:
"Beginning this Saturday, August 27, our current summer inventory will be marked down 15%-40%."
(If you go to their website, notice the Fun Runs they have scheduled on Monday nights. Might be worth trying out for someone looking for a new adventure who likes evening runs. If you go to one, let us know about it!)
End of season prices are the way to go, and if you have it in your closet next spring it'll provide one more little nudge for you to get out and RUN!
